All martial arts can be divided into three distinct categories.
There are Sportive Martial Arts, Reality Based Martial Arts,
and Traditional Martial Arts. Each category has very
specific defining factors that make it stand out from the
others. Because Jeet Kune Do is a concept and not a set
art we can actually fit into any and all of these categories
giving us the ability to pull the strong suits from each.
MARTIAL ARTS
We cover the entire evolution of Jeet Kune Do. In order to have
a complete understanding of the material one must research
and study each of the evolutionary 4 stages. This is the only
way one can “Absorb what is useful, and reject what is useless,
research their own experiences, and add that which is
specifically their own.”

CURRICULUM INCLUDES ALL 4 EVOLUTIONARY STAGES OF JEET KUNE DO FOR HISTORICAL REFERENCE
MATERIAL IS DIVIDED INTO 8 SECTIONS OF STUDY WHICH ARE:
SPORTIVE MARTIAL ARTS - REALITY BASED MARTIAL ARTS - TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS
Sportive Martial Arts are Western Boxing, Muay Thai, Savate (Boxe
France) Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Judo and now Mixed Martial
Arts which combines all the above. These arts are known for hard
work and producing strong competitive fighters. The major week
point of this category when looking at the totality of combat as a
whole would be the focus of preparing for a sporting event and
working within the confines of those rules. Basing training around
timed rounds, legal techniques, one single opponent, no weapons,
and the mindset of trying to win vs. trying to survive. These system
also can create an over-daring fighting style as opponents are
conditioned to trade blows which is not always possible without the
gloves. The major strong suit of these arts or this entire category that
separates it from the others is realistic training against fully resisting
opponents. These systems all stress full contact sparring and
students get to test their skills for real rather than go off of theory.
They all also stress fitness and cardio which is often overlooked in
the other categories.
SPORTIVE MARTIAL ARTS - WESTERN BOXING, MUAY THAI, SAVATE, BJJ, WRESTLING, JUDO, MMA
REALITY BASED MARTIAL ARTS - STREET FIGHTING, SELF DEFENSE, SENARIO TRAINING, MILITARY & LEO
Reality Based Martial Arts are a newer trend that has become popular
in the last decade. These systems are usually refined systems based
on simple tactics pulled from various arts. There overall strong suit is
the focus on realistic attacks. They are known to work actual scenario’s
that would happen in the street. Fights don’t usually start from across a
ring when you are ready in your stance so these systems teach you to
fight from natural stances and work on reacting to surprise attacks. The
tactics taught in these systems usually includes things that would be
illegal in a sportive setting such as strikes to the eyes and groin,
Headbutts, biting or whatever it takes to survive. They also tend to
address wild and unorthodox attacks that would not be common from a
trained fighter but are very common in an attack from an angry
untrained opponent. Physical training is usually accompanied by
situational awareness and general safety tips. Stress Inoculation and
handicap type training is often used to prepare your mind for the reality
of combat. These systems usually incorporate weapons training and
defenses of some kind and also teach methods and tactics of fighting
multiple opponents. The down side to these arts is because of the
violent nature of their training they can’t really train their tactics
realistically against a full resisting opponent without a lot of unnatural
protective equipment or someone getting seriously injured. This can
cause students to lack realistic timing and ability to apply the tactics
they know. Often the founders of these systems come from a previous
martial arts background from one of the other categories giving them
the time and experience to be able to functionalize their art but this can
sometimes be difficult to transfer to students who only train in these
systems.
TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS - WING CHUN, TAI CHI, QI GONG, BAGUA
Traditional Martial Arts are arts that are hundreds or even
thousands of years old. They are heavily structured and
based on traditions and methods that have been passed
down from generations. The strong suit of these arts is that
they usually have a very organized structured plan of how to
get students from point A to point B. These systems teach
much more than physical techniques and are usually heavily
rooted in philosophy and spirituality. Traditional systems
obsess over proper technique and form and help to develop
the body. The down side of these systems is that many of
them are based around outdated methods and the
practitioners are more concerned with maintaining the
traditions than evolving with the times. Many of the traditional
systems today have become watered down and become soft.
It is rare for practitioners of Traditional Systems to work on
applying their arts against practitioners of others systems so
they are basing all of their attack and defense skills around
fighting someone from their own style.
THE JEET KUND DO CONNECTION - ABSORB WHAT IS USEFUL AND REJECT WHAT IS USELESS
If you were to ask which one does Jeet Kune Do fit into you could get
3 different and all correct answers. We teach all the major sportive
martial arts and even have students who successfully compete in
Boxing, Kickboxing, BJJ, Submission wrestling, and Mixed Martial
Arts. This along with the fact that Bruce Lee was one of the leading
innovators of cross training and was dubbed the Godfather of MMA
by UFC President Dana White secure our position in the sportive
category we do weapons training from Filipino Kali and Escrima, we
include scenario training, situational awareness, stress Inoculation,
and Mass Attack training. We use the sportive striking based system
as a vehicle to apply strikes to the eyes and groin. We use grappling
arts like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling to apply arts like Kino Mutai
(The Art of Biting and Eye Gouging). Furthermore Bruce Lee was
one of the Innovators of realistic modern training methods so we
definitely fit into the Reality Based Category. Tai Chi was Bruce Lee’s
first art and Wing Chun is the Nucleolus of Jeet Kune Do. Our
training comes from a variety of traditional systems some of which
can be dated back thousands of years and we are committed to
upholding these standards and keeping these arts alive. Our focus
on meditation, form, and spirituality defiantly secures our place with
the Traditional Martial Arts. As Bruce Lee said absorb what is useful
and reject what is useless we take the best aspects of each category
to create our own unique expression of the martial way.
